Stephen Ministry

Stephen Ministry is a program that equips lay persons to provide distinctively Christian one-on-one care to those who are experiencing all kinds of life needs and circumstances—such as illness, divorce, loss of a loved one, loss of employment--both in our congregation and community.

It is a confidential ministry—those receiving care can be sure their identity and what goes on in the caring relationship will remain private.

Stephen Ministers:

  • Work together with clergy to reach more people with Christian care
  • Create an environment in which many can offer God’s love and care in intentional, systematic ways.  Care receivers receive quality Christian care from a lay person while continuing contact with clergy.
  • Complete 50 hours of initial training in important caring ministry skills and concepts before becoming caregivers.
  • Participate in regular support and supervision under the guidance of trained Stephen Leaders.

Stephen Ministers are expected to meet with their care receivers for one hour per week and attend supervision meetings once a month.  Six times a year we have continuing education sessions utiliizing outside speakers who are authorities in their fields.  We have 16 Stephen Ministers available and are currently serving 11 care receivers.  In addition we have five Stephen Leaders:  Zanne Baker 725-9124, John McGee 287-6890, JIm Stokes 924-6015, Deb Howard 923-1038, and Jack Scruggs 409-6823.

Everybody benefits from Stephen Ministry.  Those receiving care from Stephen Ministers benefit because they receive prayer and support throughout the crisis they face.  Stephen Ministers benefit through the spiritual growth they experience from being involved in meaningful ministry.  Our clergy benefit because caring ministry at St. Paul's is expanded.  Most of all, you benefit from the knowledge that special care is available to you should you need it.  In addition, you have a place where you can refer a friend, relative, or anyone else you know who is going through a difficult time so that they can receive special care when they need it most.  Stepehen Ministry makes St. Paul's a much more caring place.

If you are interested in this fulfilling ministry as either a Stephen Minister or as a care receiver, please contact the Rev. John Shields (723-4391 or E-mail) or one of the Stephen Leaders.
