The Rev. Phillip Squire, Pastoral Assistant

Phillip was born in Toledo, Ohio, moving at the age of 5 to Battle Creek, Michigan, when his dad was transferred by the Railway Express Agency. He was educated in the Lakeview school system and graduated from Lakeview High School in 1968. He is a 1972 graduate of Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana with a BS major in psychology and a BA minor in US history. After completing his college degrees, he entered the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, graduating with a MDiv in 1976. His first call was to First Lutheran in Nashville, TN, as assistant pastor serving from 1976 to 1979. It was here that he met his wife Mary Anne Roberts of Chattanooga, TN, after she had finished graduate school. She is employed as director of Healthcare Access, Inc. in Winston-Salem.
In July 1979 Phillip was called to the team ministry of Holy Trinity Lutheran in Hickory, NC, where he served until 1983, when he was called to Resurrection Lutheran in Kings Mountain, NC. There he served as solo pastor until November 1988. That same month he came to King of Glory in Clemmons when the Lutheran Bishop of NC asked him to try his hand at redeveloping a mission after the organizing pastor had died in office. He spent sixteen years there and then took a sabbatical. During the second year of that time Philip called Bishop Curry whom he had met soon after his election as bishop of the NC Diocese, and asked if he could be of any help to the diocese. Bishop Curry said "When can you start?"
Wanting to do a bit more than preach and celebrate on Sundays as a fill-in priest, he met with John Shields to offer his help and, as they say, the rest is history. His primary duties are with the senior members of St. Paul's. Phillip enjoys golf and bowling and all outdoor activities especially spelunking, anything in or on the water, and roller coaster riding. He and Mary Anne enjoy traveling stateside and abroad.
