For more than 50 years, bright smiles and excited voices of children have filled the halls of St. Paul’s Preschool (SPP). These young, budding students with their love of life and learning are the motivating force behind SPP’s dedication to provide quality early childhood education.

SPP was originally founded as a kindergarten program in 1957. It began with one class led by two teachers and has evolved into 14 classes with a staff of 30 teachers. Annually, the preschool’s enrollment is approximately 185 children, with about 135 in attendance on most days.

SPP is a half-day program open from 9 am to noon and includes a LunchBunch from noon to 1 pm for 2-year-olds and above. Classes range from infants (4 months of age) to readiness (5-year-olds).

The SPP Board is a dedicated group of parents, teachers, church staff, and parishioners. The board works quietly behind the scenes for the good of the entire preschool program by overseeing the budget, planning improvements and dealing with issues that may arise.

SPP is proud of its exceptional teaching staff. Ninety percent of the staff are certified with NC Early Childhood Credentials and all staff members participate in continuing education programs and activities, such as workshops and conferences. SPP teachers constantly go “above and beyond” each day to provide the best educational environment for the children in their care. They are the backbone of our program.

Parent volunteers can share their time in a variety of ways. The Parent Council is co-chaired by two parents and comprised of parent representatives from each classroom. The council sponsors social events throughout the school year including Breakfast with Daddy, the Santa Tea, and the Fall Festival. The Parent Council also sponsors fundraisers such as the annual Clothing Exchange and Original Work (items adorned with children’s artwork). Funds benefit a wide-range of projects, as well as providing classroom equipment.

Parents also support the school by helping in their child’s classroom. Surprising the class as a “Mystery Reader” is among one of the more popular activities. We are fortunate to have such wonderful families at SPP.

SPP children enjoy a variety of enrichment opportunities during their school day. All children (2 years-old and above) have a weekly class with the school’s music teacher. The 4 and 5-year-olds are treated to special weekly sessions in clay and woodworking and science. Beginning at age 3½, children attend a weekly chapel service led by one of the clergy of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. Extra-curricular classes by outside organizations offer additional enrichment in computers, gymnastics, art, and Spanish. These after-school programs allow parents to enrich their children’s experiences while letting them stay in a setting that is convenient and where the child already feels comfortable.

The staff and teachers of SPP work with children at an age when they are learning more rapidly than any other time in their lives. We provide a loving, nurturing environment in which they can grow and develop mentally, socially, physically, and spiritually. This is a tremendous responsibility and one we eagerly accept and appreciate.
