Funerals
“But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers and sisters, about those who have died, so that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have died.”
~ 1 Thessalonians 3:13-14
Our assurance as Christians is that nothing, not even death, shall separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord (Book of Common Prayer). The burial of a Christian marks the fulfillment of his or her Baptism in Christ’s death that they might live with Him in the glory of His resurrection (The Worship of the Church).
When a person dies, the church has really no other ministry than to affirm the resurrection. On the resurrection is based the strength and confidence that the church tries to give to those who mourn, the assurance of pardon in the face of unresolved guilt, the hope of the presence of God to those who enter that unknown land.
