Lent 2010 Series "Fasting and the Desert"
Wednesday Evening Lenten Suppers and Programs ~ Feb. 24, March 3, 10 & 17 ~ 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
We will be exploring the theme of "Fasting and the Desert" during Lent. Fasting could mean not eating a certain type of food, or refraining from doing something that might be harmful to us or to the environment. We might be invited to consider our own "desert temptations" as we participate in our Lenten liturgies and formation programs. We will share a simple supper of soup and bread together on four Wednesdays.Children will have their own program entitled "Desert Days" that will run concurrently with two series for adults: a Lenten film series sponsored by the Adult Formation Committee and a class called "Living With Hope in a Broken World," led by The Rev. Tom Murray and Lucy Paynter. Childcare will be provided.
Living with Hope in a Broken World
Wednesday Night Workshop Series
Facilitated by The Rev. Tom Murray & Lucy Paynter
March 3,10 & 17 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
"God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good" (Genesis 1:31). Yet people are sick with cancer, getting divorced, struggling with addiction and dealing with the grief that comes from losing a loved one. And if we aren’t personally struggling with these kinds of issues right now, surely we know and love someone who is.
So how does our Christian faith influence it all? How do we live with hope in a broken world? These questions will guide our discussions during this four - part series facilitated by The Rev. Tom Murray, Lucy Paynter and others with experience and expertise in the fields of grief, cancer, divorce and addiction.
March 17: Living with Divorce — Billie Mizel, gifted area counselor, will share the dynamics of this situation and tools for healthy living.March 10: Living in Recovery — Jeff Coppage, Director of Prodigals Community.March 3: Living with Cancer — Laurie Mathes, Oncology Nurse Navigator at Forsyth Cancer Center and cancer survivor.
During each of our meeting times, The Rev. Tom Murray will lay a theological foundation for our discussions, emphasizing the importance of relationships in God’s divine plan of salvation. A speaker will join us every Wednesday to address a particular topic. At the end of each speaker’s presentation, Lucy Paynter will lead a question and answer period. Participants will take away resources for living with hope in a broken world.
On Wednesday February 24, begins St. Paul's Wednesday Night Lenten series for adults. Two concurrent series will be offered: one on caring for ourselves and others during difficult times, and a film series that explores the theme of fasting. Please click on the links below to see videos with more details and information about each course. Dinner is served each Wednesday beginning at 5:30 p.m., and childcare will be provided (in addition to a class for elementary children called Desert Days).
