Overflow Shelter
Homeless people in Winston-Salem have a new place to go to escape the cold weather. First Baptist Church opened its overflow shelter in January 2009. It’s the church’s second year opening up its gymnasium as a shelter. People are bussed over from other shelters in the area. The church can hold up to 30 men and women a night. The church is looking for donations of cotton blankets, hats, gloves and scarves to help keep people warm. Anyone interested in volunteering should contact the Overflow Shelter Volunteer Coordinator at 723-4391, ext 445. For more information about the emergency overflow shelter, contact Dianne Dawson Garrett, the Advocacy for the Poor at 725-6155 or dianne@advocacyforthepoor.org or Mike Bradshaw at 723-4391, ext.511 or mbradshaw@stpauls-ws.org.
