Alpha is a twelve week introduction to the Christian faith developed by Holy Trinity Brompton, an Anglican church in London. Topics covered range from Who is Jesus? and Why Did Jesus Die? to How Can I Be Sure Of My Faith? How To Read The Bible, and How and When to Pray. In addition to the weekly course sessions, a weekend is devoted to the work of the Holy Spirit.
Alpha is a small group course that encourages friendship as well as faith. Each session begins with a meal, followed by a video talk by the Rev. Nicky Gumble, Rector of Holy Trinity Brompton, and then a facilitated small group discussion. Participants are free to ask questions in a group setting which is affirming. The course works equally well for church members, newcomers, seekers, and those who are unsure of their faith. For many participants, the course is a transforming experience.
Alpha is offered at St. Paul’s on Tuesday evenings twice a year, the Fall Course beginning on the last Tuesday in August and the Spring Course beginning on the second Tuesday in January. Alpha is also offered as a Sunday morning class primarily for parents of confirmands, although all are welcome to that class as well.
